ARTIST GUILD: Introduction

A Word From the Guild Commander: "Welcome all that have entered the guild!"

Your presence, this day, is a delight to my beating heart. There is much to accomplish, so let us make haste. Our quest will take us from the center of all that is creative and flourish into Skilled Artisans. Look lively and glean from your brothern/sistern. Together, we are one strong!!! Those that have enlisted, you shall fall under the following recruits: ____________________ •The sure handed Artisan (or artist): One familiar with Comic book Art - has a knowing of the basics ____________________ •The keen-eyed Artisan: One who understands perspective, and is willing to train his fellow guildsmen. ____________________ •The detailed Artisan: One who is familiar with figure drawing or at least knows some general basics ____________________ •The cataloging writer. One who who has been endowed with the ability to tell wondrous tales of suspense and adventure. ____________________ •The color wielder. One who has been given the gift to release immense radiance of color accross any surface. ____________________ Focus of this Guild: We are a group of skilled artisans who gather to draw amazing imagery, to feed off each other's strengths, develop relationships, and honor the one sitting to your right while keeping a peaceful, light and friendly atmosphere.

Introduction

Hi all, thanks to Caanan for inviting me here. I'm John Rauch, for those of you who don't know me. I've been working in comics since 96 as a colorist, but recently started drawing a book as well. Hopefully I can contribute something useful to the community here. I'm definitely looking forward to it. For starters, I'm posting a couple a video I recorded over the weekend and a few of my recent pieces for work. Sorry for the length on the video.

This one is from the book I'm illustrating, 'This Hollow World'.

This is of a couple custom characters from the game, 'City of Heroes' for gamer-art.com (coming soon).

This is from Hyperion vs. Nighthawk #4. Paul Gulacy provided the lines and I did the colors.

Szerian said...: What program do you use to do your craft? I'm an aspiring colorist but I only have PS7 and I'm having a hell of a time trying to get my colors the way I want them. Is there a way to use PS7 to color the same way you do? I really enjoyed the video and seeing your process on the colors. Let me know what you use and how much it may cost to get it. John Rauch said...: I'm using CS2/9, but only recently upgraded from 7. Everything I do can be done in 7 as well. If anything, I'd say the only way my process is different than a lot of other colorists is that every brush I use is custom made by me. A cool thing to experiment with in the brush options is "Color Dynamics". You can actually make a brush that uses your foreground swatch when you apply more pressure and the background swatch when you use less. It's very handy.; April 17, 2007 at 9:49 PM

Cadre said...: nope... it was drawn by Dave Hyatt... I was brought in only as background inker... to get my feet wet... talk a bout a trial by fire... lol. Hopefully, upon looking around the Corner gallery and my inks in particular, you'll know otherwise.
