Introduction

Hi all, thanks to Caanan for inviting me here. I'm John Rauch, for those of you who don't know me. I've been working in comics since 96 as a colorist, but recently started drawing a book as well. Hopefully I can contribute something useful to the community here. I'm definitely looking forward to it. For starters, I'm posting a couple a video I recorded over the weekend and a few of my recent pieces for work. Sorry for the length on the video.

This one is from the book I'm illustrating, 'This Hollow World'.

This is of a couple custom characters from the game, 'City of Heroes' for gamer-art.com (coming soon).

This is from Hyperion vs. Nighthawk #4. Paul Gulacy provided the lines and I did the colors.

Eraser, man this is cool. I particularly enjoy the drawing portion. Seeing you work from concept, to completion is invaluable - and your pro status defiantly shines through. Thanks for sharing man. Accessional work!!

be blessed

GREAT work! Love the dynamics to your colors! You're the type of colorist I am aspiring to be. Love the "drawing class" video. I've only ever seen Caanan draw before so it was cool to see your process! Can't wait to see what else you contribute to the Guild!

Welcome to the fold John... we've met before and even worked somewhat on a book together... my very first comic in the biz... Bubba the Redneck #5 which you colored the cover of... I know... "don't mention that one" lol... just messing... glad to have ya on board. :D

You didn't draw the cover did you? Man, that was...well, something. I learned a lesson though. Never agree to color anything without a proven track record unless you can preview the art first.

What program do you use to do your craft? I'm an aspiring colorist but I only have PS7 and I'm having a hell of a time trying to get my colors the way I want them. Is there a way to use PS7 to color the same way you do? I really enjoyed the video and seeing your process on the colors. Let me know what you use and how much it may cost to get it. Thanks!

I'm using CS2/9, but only recently upgraded from 7. Everything I do can be done in 7 as well. If anything, I'd say the only way my process is different than a lot of other colorists is that every brush I use is custom made by me. A cool thing to experiment with in the brush options is "Color Dynamics". You can actually make a brush that uses your foreground swatch when you apply more pressure and the background swatch when you use less. It's very handy.

Thanks for the tip! I still need to play around with PS so maybe I can figure out how you do it. Great tutorial! You're a GENIUS of your craft. Love what you can do!

nope... it was drawn by Dave Hyatt... I was brought in only as background inker... to get my feet wet... talk a bout a trial by fire... lol. Hopefully, upon looking around the Corner gallery and my inks in particular, you'll know otherwise.

we hope... ;)
